The Paris organizers and the World Triathlon Federation "put the health of the athletes first" and an analysis of the water quality in the Seine on July 27 showed that the water quality did not provide sufficient protection for the (triathlon swimming training) event, the statement said.

Organizers blamed the lack of water quality in the Seine on rainy weather in recent days and said they were "confident" the water would improve and meet the standard by the time the triathlon begins on July 30, AFP reported.

If the water quality is not up to standard by then, a "Plan B" will be activated, including postponing the event for a few days or moving the swimming event to Weil-sur-Marne, east of Paris.

According to the Olympic schedule, the marathon swimming and triathlon swimming events will be held in the Seine River. The water quality of the Seine River is therefore of great concern.

Over the past decade, the city of Paris and other relevant authorities have invested more than 1 billion euros (about 7.8 billion yuan) in cleaning up the Seine. The Seine water quality test report released by the Paris municipal government on July 4 shows that the level of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria in the Olympic swimming stage of the Seine River has dropped to the standard required by the World Swimming Federation for open water events.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo jumped into the Seine River for a swim Wednesday morning to prove to the outside world that the water quality of the Seine River is "clean enough" to ensure the normal holding of water events at the Paris Olympic Games, France 24 news network reported.

Hidalgo reportedly wore a wetsuit and goggles to swim in the Seine as hundreds of people gathered on the banks to watch. She was accompanied by Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Organizing Committee.

The pair swam along the Seine River near Paris City Hall and Notre Dame Cathedral, greeting spectators from time to time.

Hidalgo's office previously said in a statement that the event showcases the efforts of the city of Paris and France to improve the water quality of the Seine and the ecological condition of the river.

Hidalgo had planned to swim in the Seine in June, but postponed it because of water quality problems. Water tests in June showed excessive levels of bacteria in the Seine, which had been washed into the river by heavy rains.

The swimming events of the triathlon are scheduled to take place in the Seine River on July 30-31 and August 5, and the open water swimming will take place on August 8-9.
